As the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) navigates a leadership transition, Innovate Public Schools wants to recognize Superintendent Alberto Carvalho for his commitment to collaborating with Los Angeles families and parent leaders and welcome the newly appointed Superintendent Andrew Chait.
During his time as Superintendent, Mr.Carvalho participated in meaningful opportunities for families to be seen, heard, and engaged in conversations about high quality education in Los Angeles. For Innovate parent leaders, that collaboration mattered. It gave families an opportunity to share their experiences directly with district leaders, ask important questions, and advocate for the resources their children and school communities need.
This commitment is reflected in our collaborative work on the Family Guide to the LAUSD Strategic Plan. In 2022, Superintendent Carvalho released a four-year strategic plan for LAUSD, setting ambitious goals to improve student achievement and close opportunity gaps in the district. When the Superintendent met with Innovate parent leaders in November 2022, he committed to develop a guide that would help families understand what was promised in the district’s strategic plan. This guide was developed by and for parents and caregivers, with the goal of engaging them in meaningful conversations with schools and district leaders about the district’s goals. The Family Guide is a reflection of Mr. Carvalho’s leadership and commitment to supporting LAUSD families. Moments like this helped move our organizing efforts forward and affirmed parent leader priorities. Together with LAUSD’s Office of Family Engagement, Innovate parents are currently working on a Family Guide for the 2026-2023 Strategic Plan.
We also commend the former Superintendent on his commitment to supporting the safety and wellbeing of immigrant students and families by launching the We Are One campaign.

As LAUSD moves forward, we want to welcome Mr. Andrés Chait as the new LAUSD Superintendent. We look forward to working with Superintendent Chait, district leaders, parent leaders, and community partners to ensure family voice and equity are at the center of high-quality education decisions.
