South LA Parents and Community Members Rally for Improved Black Student Literacy

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA In the heart of South Los Angeles, on Manchester Avenue at True LA Church, parents and community members called for increased focus, targeted funding and community support to improve the Black Student Literacy rate in LA County Schools. The “Literacy is Life” campaign highlights the 73% of Los Angeles Unified School District and 72% of Compton Unified School District Black third grade students who are not on grade level in English Language Arts.

On Thursday May 2nd, Innovate Public Schools partnered with the San Francisco Unified School District to raise awareness and build support for Policy 5023: a language translation and interpretation policy designed to improve accessibility for parents of English Learner students with an IEP.

On Tuesday November 28, over 100 LAUSD families gathered at Bethune Middle School in South Los Angeles to learn about Innovate’s Family Guide to the LAUSD Strategic Plan. The guide was co-created by Innovate Public Schools and LAUSD to help families understand the goals outlined in LAUSD’s 2022-26 Strategic Plan.
