The pandemic and long-standing inequities continue to impact Los Angeles Unified students. Based on 2021-22 data, only 58% of LAUSD students are graduating eligible to apply for a UC/CSU. In 2022, LAUSD Superintendent Carvalho released a strategic plan for LAUSD called, Ready for the World, that makes bold promises around the district’s plan to address academic recovery.
If implemented successfully, LAUSD’s 2022-2026 Strategic Plan will improve social-emotional wellness of students, ensure more students are on grade level in English and math, and increase the rate of LAUSD students graduating college and career ready to 70%. Parents and families are committed to ensuring LAUSD fulfills these promises for students.
LAUSD’s strategic plan sets ambitious goals that will improve student achievement and close opportunity gaps. However, the document is 66 pages long, making it overwhelming and not easily digestible for parents. In order to keep LAUSD accountable to meeting goals for students, parents first need to understand what’s being promised.
When Supt. Carvalho met with Innovate parent leaders in November 2022, he committed to develop a guide that will help families understand what’s being promised in LAUSD’s Strategic Plan. Then in April 2023, Innovate began working in partnership with families and LAUSD to create a family guide that’s rooted in parent voice.
1. Inform them on the strategic plan and
2. Equip them to have powerful conversations with school and district leaders to ensure schools are meeting goals for students.
Parents joining forces with LAUSD to create this guide will not just shape a brighter future for LAUSD students, it will also transform how the district engages families.
Innovate is proud to work in collaboration with families and the Los Angeles Unified School District to design a guide for families that uplifts parent voice and focuses on helping students thrive. The family guide will be published and shared in Spanish and English throughout all 1,197 LAUSD schools in Fall 2023.
Innovate Public Schools is a nonprofit community organization that builds the capacity of parents and educators working together to create excellent and equitable public schools.
