A very interesting new report is out that finds that districts across the country are increasingly lengthening the school day and the school year – practices that have previously been far more common in charter schools. High-poverty students benefit the most from extended learning time. However, in California, charter schools still far outnumber district schools in offering expanded time: 102 charter schools vs. 34 district schools. More than a third of those district schools are in San Francisco Unified. The only school in Silicon Valley is Pioneer High in San Jose, plus a handful of schools in Oakland, Hayward, Fremont and San Lorenzo, according to the report database. Those interested in digging deeper should definitely check out the full report which digs into trends and policies at the federal, state and local level.
