Today, the State Board of Education (SBE) unanimously approved Promise Academy, which plans to open with grades TK-8 in downtown San Jose this fall!

“We’re feeling ecstatic, over the moon,” said Yolanda Bernal Samano, a parent leader with Promise Academy. “We’ve really had a long journey.”

The school’s founder, Dr. Anthony Johnson, is an Entrepreneur-in-Residence with Innovate Public Schools and has been working with parents for over a year to get the school approved. They gathered over 300 signatures from parents interested in the school.

The petition for a small K-12 public charter school got split votes from both the San Jose Unified School District (SJUSD) and the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) before going to the SBE on appeal. Promise plans to provide college prep for first generation college students, critical supports for students with disabilities, and has a partnership with The Tech Museum in San Jose to provide additional resources for learning and career readiness.
