Pictured above are parents, students and community members celebrating a successful tutoring program. Thanks to the persistence of parents and creative partnership, in January 2022, 100 low-income students in San Francisco received algebra tutoring from the highest rated private tutoring service in San Francisco, Alexander Tutoring.
The vision
Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, most low-income students weren’t getting the high-quality education and support they needed. In the summer of 2020, Innovate parent leaders organized to expand tutoring access for San Francisco students. The pandemic and school closures only exacerbated the inequities that most Sf families faced. As parents looked for solutions, it was clear that tutoring was one of the most powerful and practical ways to accelerate learning for students.
Their vision grew big: free high-quality tutoring for all San Francisco students.
Innovate parent leaders saw that pilot programs could be a powerful way to get help to students fast, prove what’s possible and inspire and inform bigger, publicly-funded initiatives. When they connected with Alexander Tutoring, it was clear they shared our commitment to this vision and could deliver quality tutoring for families.
Successful start with 98% parent satisfaction
The inaugural semester of Andromeda Math Partners served over one hundred 8th to 10th graders across 48 public schools from January to June 2022. 75% of students registered for the ten week 2022 summer session, and 85% of students registered for the 2022 fall session. Given the enthusiastic reception by families, Andromeda Math Partners broadened its goal to ensure students successfully navigate all math classes required for high school graduation, including Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2.
After surveying parents and students here’s what we learned:
- 77% of students indicated this tutoring program helped them improve their grades in math.
- 98% of students told us this tutoring program helped them feel more positive about math.
- 96% of parents said their child saw improvement in math & 100% said their child feels more positive about math.
One parent shared, “This tutoring program changes the lives of young people. My son is very happy as he went from grades C and D in math, to grade A. It really was a miracle that you came into our lives.”
We aim to double in size in 2023
Innovate Public Schools, Alexander Tutoring and Enliven Learning Partners are working closely together to optimize the program ensuring that we continue to deliver highly effective tutoring experiences as we scale programmatic efforts and pursue San Francisco Tutoring Corps’ vision to deliver free high quality tutoring to all local students who need it.
As part of this optimization work, Andromeda Math Partners will deepen and operationalize its Whole Child tutoring strategies; expand its measurement framework to incorporate nationally-normed standardized testing; and continue to partner with the involved and dedicated parents of the San Francisco Tutoring Corps.
We still need your support
We are working to raise the $250K needed to continue Andromeda Math Partners throughout the 2022-2023 school year and to grow the program from 100 to 200 students in the spring semester.
