Dear Promise Academy Supporters,

On Wednesday, we brought our case for a better school option in downtown San Jose to the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) Board of Trustees.

We presented our charter petition with plans for our school, but faced opposition from the San Jose Unified School District and San Jose Teacher’s Union. After several hours of public comment, including powerful testimony from many of our brave parent leaders, the board vote tied at 3-3. Unfortunately, that means that the school doesn’t get county approval.

While we are disappointed, the fight is not over. We will be appealing to the California State Board of Education this January and are confident that our petition will get a fair hearing.

We would like to thank SCCOE Trustees Darcie Greene, Joe Di Salvo and Grace Mah for voting in favor of Promise Academy’s charter petition. They demonstrated their commitment to and belief in the students of downtown San Jose by supporting a school that has high expectations for all students. We also offer our thanks to San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, The Tech Museum of Innovation CEO Tim Ritchie, and former SJUSD Superintendent Linda Murray who came out to the meeting to voice their support.

We remain as committed as ever to the students of downtown San Jose and will work tirelessly to open Promise Academy’s doors in the fall of 2018.

Best regards,

Dr. Anthony H, Johnson, CEO
