LAUSD must include parents as they plan for a return to school in the Fall. #NoProgressNoReturn

Call on LAUSD School Board Members and Superintendent Beutner to Implement Parent Demands for schooling in the FALL!

Long-term school closures cause learning loss for all students and widen the opportunity gap for Black and Latino students. Our district has never treated its Black, Latino, and low-income students equitably, or provided the resources necessary to meet their needs. In order to do better and provide a high-quality education for our students, Superintendent Beutner must include parents in the decision-making. Last Spring, as the district negotiated the terms for what distance learning would look like, parents were left out. This must not happen again.

Take action to ensure parents, students and teachers get the support they need for successful learning this Fall. Fill out this form to tell Superintendent Beutner and LAUSD School Board Members to include parents, starting with its negotiations with UTLA on a memorandum of understanding for the new school year. This agreement will determine whether our children will return to a system that has never worked for them, or whether they will return to a system that is more responsive, just, and consistent.

These are the 4 demands:

  1. LAUSD makes clear commitments to our children – on budget priorities, student learning and safe reopening of schools.
    • Do more than just a survey. Every public school publishes a plan to address the massive amount of lost learning due to school closures, using assessments and remedial support to catch students up, especially those students that are behind and vulnerable, beginning this summer and continuing through the 2020-2021 school year.
    • Students need technology. All students have access to computers and the internet in their homes, with priority for low-income students.
    • Students need their teacher. Teachers must offer direct instruction weekly, including a mix of pre-recorded video instruction, live instruction, small group instruction, feedback on assignments, one on one communication with each student.
    • Students need each other. To make sure that our children are still part of a learning community, students need to be together by live video in a class-type setting multiple times per week
  2. LAUSD engages parents with Useful and Timely Information
    • Schools communicate with each family by phone or video at least once per week. For middle and high schools, where teachers have more than one class of students, this could be done by a homeroom/advisory teacher.
    • Provide resources and supports for parents to support their child’s learning at home.
  3. LAUSD Is Clear and Transparent About Its Decisions
    • Given the crisis in public education, school boards need to meet at least twice per month, and meetings must be accessible to the public by video, with ease of public comment and interpretation for languages other than English.
    • Convene an Education Recovery Committee of the LAUSD School Board with parents as key stakeholders and voices
    • Allow parents to conduct safety walk-throughs and demonstrations before physically reopening schools.
  4. LAUSD centers equity in every step.
    • Public schools offer customized supports for special populations, including students already behind, those with disabilities, and English Learners.
    • All public schools give families access to high-quality social/emotional resources and tools that they can access frequently, including social workers and counselors who can provide 1:1 support.
