Black Student Achievement

Parent leaders work to ecure funding for Black Student Achievement, ensuring that it will go towards the success of Black students with a whole child approach in mind

Key Facts:

  • There are 298,733 African American students in California. This is larger than the overall K-12 student populations of 11 states, including Hawaii, Vermont, and South Dakota.
  • Only 3 out of 10 Black students (30%) are on grade level in English, and less than 2 out of 10 (16%) are on grade level in math. Regardless of income, Black students in California are struggling which is why they need direct funding and clear district-level accountability plans.
  • California schools are failing our Black students. Due to systemic racism, Black students have been the lowest performing group of students in English and math in California for decades.
  • Only 41% of Black students are prepared by their schools to graduate eligible to apply to a public four-year university (UC/CSU).
  • Four in 10 African American students were chronically absent in 2021-22, which is double the percentage of White students and more than double the percentage of Asian students. This means African American students are missing out on valuable learning time and opportunities.
