Sierra Abukins brings diverse experience in journalism, public relations and non-profit advocacy work to her role at Innovate Public Schools. She started her career as a reporter in her hometown of Sonoma, CA, then moved to Mexico City where she worked in marketing and business development.
Sierra’s passion for public education advocacy and civic engagement was ignited when she started working as a Field Representative in East Los Angeles for State Senator Gloria Romero, who was Chair of the Senate Education Committee. She saw first-hand both the tremendous need for more great education options for families, as well as the incredible potential and exciting work already underway by many different organizations and individuals across different sectors.
Sierra then went on to serve as Director of Advocacy Communications for the California Charter Schools Association from 2010-2014. In this role with the statewide association, she provided strategic communications support for a wide variety of initiatives, as well as helping to roll out research reports and developing bilingual resources to educate and empower parents.
Sierra has a B.A. in History and a minor in Latin American Studies from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR.
I’m passionate about ______ because ______.
I’m passionate about education because an excellent education is transformational and the denial of education is an unconscionable injustice – both at the personal level and for our whole society.
