Matt Hammer

José is Principal in Training at Voices College-Bound Language Academy in preparation for the opening of Voices West Contra Costa. Before his current role, José taught 6th and 7th grade Spanish Language Arts and Social Studies at the Voices Flagship site. Prior to Voices, José served as School Site Unit Director at a Title I school in Redwood City for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Peninsula (BGCP). While at BGCP, José ran organization-wide workshops, coached staff on classroom management, and collaborated closely with the school principal. Inspired by the Principal’s vision and determination, José chose to pursue a career in education. In 2014, Jose was accepted to Teach for America (TFA) and became part of the Voices team as a middle school teacher. José continues working with BGCP as an Instructional Consultant providing workshops on maintaining student engagement, classroom management, and behavior management practices. In his free time, José volunteers for the San Mateo Youth Foundation (SMYF) mentoring high school students and supporting them throughout the college and financial aid application process. Last April, José completed his participation in the Emerging Leaders program offered through New Leaders.

José earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley and an Urban Education with a specialization in Administration and Policy from Loyola Marymount University. Currently, José is working on his Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Organizational Change and Leadership at the University of Southern California (USC).
